An encouragement from Chapter 4 of Awe of God by John Bevere:

“God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those around Him” Psalm 89:7

This verse encourages us to ponder on these questions: What does it mean to tremble at God’s presence? How is this practically lived out when I’m alone? When I’m with friends? When I’m in public places? When I’m in a church service?

Too often we can get caught up in the distractions that go on around us and find ourselves shifting our attention to those things instead of God. Many times church, worship, reading the Bible, and even praying becomes casual and routine. Because of this, our mind can shift elsewhere and focus on those other things. However, being in the presence of God should never be “routine” or “casual". It's a most gracious gift to be able to step boldly into God’s presence and invite Him to commune with us. The deep respect and reverence that we must have for God does not coexist with an uncaring attitude.

Just as we care about our loved ones and so respect them with attentive listening when in their presence, how much more should we show that posture towards God? It can be a challenge to take time out of our days to shift our focus entirely onto God, but it’s that fear of the Lord that keeps us in that reverent posture towards Him.

I’d like to encourage you all to reflect on those questions, and take a look at how you spend time with God - not just when, where, or how often. To fear the Lord is to immerse ourselves deeply into His presence out of complete respect and awe. I hope you take that knowing and encouragement into your week ahead!
