God demonstrates his own love for us

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8

The definition of demonstrate means: give a practical exhibition and explanation of how a machine, skill, or craft works or is performed, or to clearly show the existence or truth of (something) by giving proof or evidence.

Could we say that giving your life for another is a performance of love, a practical demonstration of love, even proof or evidence of love? Does giving your life for another prove or show existence of a true love?

Spurgeon noted about Romans 5:8:

God shows part of his love to us in many different ways, but he shows the whole of his love in giving Christ to die for us. Here you see God’s heart laid bare, the very heart of God laid open for the inspection of every believing soul. To die for saints would be great love; but to die for sinners, while they are yet sinners, and regarding them as sinners…this is love beyond emphasis, the very highest commendation that even divine love can have, show and give.

The beautiful part of this verse is that God gave His own love….his ’own’. The sacrifice of love was not given without cost, for true love has cost. God at great cost showed own His love for us before we were willing or able to return love, or show anything of value for that love. This love God showed was an eternal action, showing love for both the past, the future and the present.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

How does the love of God go beyond our own limits we place upon love?
